“If we are to know the Lord, we must go to him. Listen to him in silence before the Tabernacle and approach him in the Sacraments.”
Pope Francis
Confirmation is the anointing in the Holy Spirit.
The Sacrament of Confirmation completes Baptism where the laying on of hands and the anointing with Chrism Oil first occurred. As we are Confirmed with the fullness of the Holy Spirit we are reminded of our participation in the ministry and mission of Jesus and strengthened to follow Jesus more closely.
The sponsor brings forward the candidate for Anointing and will journey with them in faithfully fulfilling their baptismal promises under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
As Confirmation completes our Baptismal promises made by parents and godparents at Baptism, often if available, the Baptismal godparent can also be the sponsor at Confirmation. However, the choice of a new sponsor for Confirmation is acceptable.
When selecting a sponsor with your child, there are some necessary requirements to fulfil:
Confirmation will be celebrated on a day or evening as advised by the Archbishop at either Sacred Heart Church Hindmarsh or Our Lady of the Manger Findon. Children will then celebrate their First Communion on one of the nominated Sundays within our parish community.
If your child has not been baptised in the Catholic faith but has been baptised in another Christian faith, then arrangements must be made for your child to be Received into the Catholic Faith. Reception into the Catholic Church must take place before your child is able to celebrate Sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation or First Eucharist.
